Ancient and Modern Cagliari: Tuvixeddu – the ruins itinerary

A fascinating historical-archaeological tour between ancient and modern times in the largest Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean that lets you discover the multiple transformations of the urban landscape up to the present day.

The necropolis of Tuvixeddu is the largest Punic necropolis still existing in the Mediterranean. It extends within the city of Cagliari on the entire hill of the same name, and lies between the districts of Sant’Avendrace and Is Maglias. The archaeological area is very large, originally covering an area of about 80 hectares that reached as far as the Santa Gilla lagoon, which it overlooks today.

The name Tuvixeddu means ‘hill with small holes’, from the Sardinian word tuvu ‘cavity’, ‘void’ due to the presence of the numerous tombs dug into the limestone rock.

In later centuries, the necropolis was further extended on the slopes of the hill, where the Romans excavated chamber, incineration and pit tombs. There are also monumental tombs belonging to famous people.
In modern centuries, and in particular throughout the 19th century, the area was used for industrial and residential purposes. The most important evidence is provided by the system of bourgeois villas that surround the Tuvixeddu hill and the necropolis, such as the beautiful Art Nouveau Villa Mulas dating from the early 20th century.

With our tour we retrace the classic historical-archaeological path of the necropolis and of the subsequent developments and reuses of the modern and contemporary period up to the present day.
